Brews & Brushes

In the style of Wine & Design, we took a Brews & Brushes llama painting class with the Town of Cary. Both of us grabbed a cocktail at the Mayton Inn's bar first (a jalapeno margarita for me, and a lemony-thyme tequila drink for Brendan) before picking our canvas boards. Jane, our teacher, had already sketched the basic outline of a llama for us and poured different colors of acrylic paint onto paper plates.

There were five other people in the class with us, a group of two brothers and their significant others, and a woman that had attended most of Jane's other painting classes. Brendan was quick to make friends with the guy sitting on his left and soon we were all singing along with the teacher's spotify station as she instructed us on techniques for mixing colors.

We started with the shadows on the llama, before Jane encouraged us to get creative with the backgrounds. She gave us a few reference pictures; Brendan decided on a glorious sun while I attempted a sunset that quickly devolved into a simple night sky with tall grass. We spent the next two hours layering paint colors to get to our final llama depictions, with the teacher occaisonally giving advice on what to do next.

I haven't painted since junior year of high school (my mom still insists on hanging those monstrosities) but I ended up really happy with my llama! And Brendan's makes me think it's a monk in Kung-Fu Panda, ready to kick some ass. We're going to hang both in the house, as soon as the house is fit for artwork!
